New Sponsored Child – Riziki

Thanks to a generous donation from the Dorothy Holmes Charitable Trust we have been able to start sponsoring a wonderful little girl called Riziki.

Rikizi is 8 years old and lives in Mtomondoni with her Mother and 2 siblings. They share their home with Riziki’s grandmother and her 7 youngest children – which makes for a very busy home!

Riziki’s mother works in a large factory near to Mtwapa where she is able to make a regular wage but as she is the sole earner in a household of 11 people it just doesn’t stretch far enough. This means that as well as working 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week she spends her solitary ‘day off’ doing odd jobs to make a little extra money. In fact, Rieder first met Riziki’s mother whilst she was doing washing for one of his neighbours.

Riziki has been attending school on and off since she was little but as money became more tight she was able to attended less and less which means she has fallen behind her peers. When we took her for her interview at Mtwapa Elite she was placed into KG2 which is usually for children around 5 years in age, but after just a week of school she is getting back into the swing of things and already starting to show her aptitude for mathematics. Her class teacher is giving her extra tuition whilst the younger children sleep and also after standard classes finish; this one on one tuition is really helping her to regain confidence and improve her performance.

Riziki is a very sweet little girl who is really enjoying the chance to go to school. In fact, she has taken to dropping in on Rieder on the way home from school just so she can show him what she has learnt during the day.

We are really excited to be sponsoring Riziki and can’t wait to see what the future will hold for her!

New Sponsored Child – Steven

We have some exciting news to share with you. Thanks to a very generous donation from the Forest of Arden Golf Club we have been able to start sponsoring another child – Steven.

We first met Steven and his mother back in 2013, when they were one of the 86 families who received christmas food parcels and mosquito nets. Since then, we have been keeping a close eye on Steven, hoping we would be able to take him onto the Milele programme.

Steven’s mother is a single parent, extremely hardworking and loving. Steven is everything to her, and she regularly sacrifices herself to make sure that he has food to eat and is able to attend some school. Without a regular income, however, it was very hard for her to keep him in education regularly.

Thanks to the donation from the golf club, we were finally able to sponsor Steven in March 2016. Steven is a happy, energetic little boy. Every time we have been to visit Steven, he has always been out playing with his friends, whether its running and jumping playing tag, or chasing crickets outside his house. He is very friendly, with an adorable cheeky grin. Since starting in Kindergarten at Mtwapa Elite he has really started to grow in confidence, making firm friends with Saidi (another child sponsored by Milele).

Steven and his mum have gone through some very difficult times in terms of housing and food. But we are happy to say that they are now in a secure, dry and comfortable room in the same block that Saidi and his mother live in. The two mothers have quickly become very close friends and have been supporting each other, sharing food and cooking utensils as well as keeping each other company in the day while the children are at school.

Mama Steven is really keen to run her own business, so as part of the Milele Business Grants scheme we have helped her to do this- keep your eyes peeled for a post with more detail about this soon.

With Steven doing great at his new school, the future for this family has transformed dramatically, thanks to all the hard work and kindness of the Forest of Arden golfers and their families, in helping to raise the much needed money to welcome Steven onto the Milele programme. Thank-you so much.

We are looking for sponsors for Steven! If you are interested, sponsorship costs £90 per year, you can find out more here.

Please do contact us directly at milele@live.co.uk or comment on this post to get more information. Thank-you

Emmanuel – Our new sponsored child!

Hello All,

Thanks to all the fantastic hardwork of people helping us to fundraise, we have managed to raise the funds needed to take on another child to the Milele Sponsorship Programme!

Emmanuel
Emmanuel

Emmanuel is around 16 years old, and is now attending secondary school. Ordinarially Milele sponsors young children beginning at their primary education, however we made an exception here for an exceptional boy.

Over the last two years we have worked with Emmanuel at his primary school, with Rich in particular developing a great relationship with Emmanuel after teaching some maths lessons at the school. Emmanuel would arrive before everyone else in the morning, and leave after them at night. He came to study on weekends and holidays, even when the school was officially closed! He repeatedly asked Rich to set him extra homework questions after he had completed the entire textbook worth of practice questions!!

Despite being exceptionally hardworking, Emmanuel and his family had some very bad news recently. After loosing his two year old sister in a fire accident, his mother was also diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Despite receiving treatment, she unfortunately passed away 3 weeks ago.

Emmanuel and his family value education above all else, and indeed his mother sacrificed the money saved for her operation in order to enable Emmanuel to attend secondary school and continue achieving. We feel it is crucial this does indeed happen.

Emmanuel is now sponsored as part of Milele, and we now need four new sponsors to support him!

Sponsorship costs £75 per year and allows us to provide Emmanuel with everything he needs for school including uniform, textbooks, school fees, exam fees as well as a daily school lunch. Not only this, Emmanuel will also receive heathcare through Milele.

We need four individuals, couples, families or organisations to sponsor Emmanuel. These sponsors will have the opportunity to write to him, and recieve letters back.

If you think you might be able to assist us in providing this young man with everything he needs to take control of his life and begin following his dreams of becoming a pilot or a lawyer, please please do get in touch with us at info@milele.org.uk. Feel free to give us a call for a chat or to ask any questions on 07950329398, or check out the sponsorship section of our website under ‘Get Involved’

Thank-you!

New Light Childrens Home

Hello All!

News from Friday 4th September!

Yesterday we spent some time in the boys childrens home in Mtomondoni where the four sponsored boys live. Rich really amazed them all with his camera and photo printer, and we all had fun taking photos and looking at ourselves. Many of the children in this area have never seen photos of anyone, let alone themselves and many more don’t know what they look like, since there are very few mirrors in mtwapa!! All the boys at the home were extremely excited to be able to have a photo to keep and we all had a wonderful time with such simple things!

We spoke to Mr Samwel; the guardian and manager of New Light Children’s Home and his wife Beth; father and mother to all the boys there. They were very pleased to hear that Milele were able to sponsor the four boys Charo, Safari, Kaingu and Emmanuel and we planned with the boys and Mr Samwell to take them to get their uniforms after school on monday! Busy busy busy!

We have posted some photos here of the boys at New Light enjoying the camera and of the four sponsored boys, and there will be more detail about each of them individually soon too.

Thanks again everyone for your interest and support! We could never have sponsored these boys without you.

Here we are!

Hello everybody!

We have arrived into Mombasa, Kenya after a short 9 hour flight and have settled in wonderfully! We have been spending most of our time so far in a shanty town called ‘Mtwapa’ which is just north of Mombasa on the coastline.

The schools are doing tuition as it is the holidays at the minute and only a few of the children are in class, but we have been welcomed by the director and headmistress of Mtwapa Academy and by some other friends here.

Our friend Fai has also accompanied us on this trip and she is settling really well, already she is nearly a resident!! Fai will also be updating the website during the trip so keep your eyes peeled for the latest!

Thanks to all your kind donations and support we have been able to identify four brothers who will be taken onto the sponsorship programme, which is very exciting news!! The four boys are living at the New Light Children’s Home in Mtomondoni, a neighbouring residential area near Mtwapa.

Keep watching out for photos of the new sponsored children and more news soon!!

Thank-you again for all your support! It really is making a big difference here.
